Fear of falling | Helena district ranger plans to close MacDonald Pass cross-country ski system next winter unless beetle-killed pines are removed

Helena District Ranger Duane Harp said he will close the popular groomed cross-country trail system on MacDonald Pass next year — and possibly for additional years — unless thousands of dead trees along the route are removed.  Harp fears that the beetle-killed trees could fall on skiers, injuring or even killing some of the 7,000 people who take to the trails each winter.
